Self-Care is a Non-Negotiable for Black Women
Let’s face it—Black women are often expected to be superhuman. We juggle careers, family, and community responsibilities while carrying the weight of systemic challenges on our backs. But here’s the reality: constantly pushing ourselves without prioritizing self-care is not sustainable. It’s time to break the cycle.
The numbers tell a sobering story. According to the American Psychological Association, 44% of Black women report feeling stressed most or all of the time, compared to 39% of white women. Yet, only 25% of Black women who experience mental health struggles seek help, often due to stigma and lack of culturally competent care. Health outcomes reflect this imbalance: Black women are 60% more likely than white women to have high blood pressure, and stress plays a significant role in that statistic (CDC).
So, how do we shift from surviving to thriving? It starts with redefining self-care as a necessity, not a luxury. Here are four actionable steps to get started:
1. Prioritize Mental Health: Therapy is not a dirty word. Platforms like Therapy for Black Girls connect us with culturally aware professionals. If therapy feels too big to start with, journaling or mindfulness apps like Calm can be effective first steps.
2. Schedule “Do-Nothing” Time: Research from the National Sleep Foundation shows that Black adults are more likely to suffer from sleep deprivation, with 46% sleeping fewer than seven hours a night. Rest isn’t laziness—it’s healing. Block time on your calendar to simply rest and recharge.
3. Move Your Body with Joy: Physical activity isn’t just for fitness—it’s for your mental health too. Studies show that just 30 minutes of exercise three times a week reduces stress and anxiety by up to 40%. Dance, walk, stretch—find what feels good.
4. Say No More Often: A 2023 survey by LeanIn.org revealed that Black women are more likely to face “emotional labor” at work, often feeling pressure to care for others’ needs. Protect your peace by setting boundaries unapologetically.
Self-care isn’t selfish—it’s survival, and it’s revolutionary. When we take care of ourselves, we’re better equipped to take care of everything else. Remember, you are worthy of rest, joy, and healing. Let’s rewrite the narrative and make self-care our superpower.
